The honest range
Quotes for a local-trade website vary widely, from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. The difference is rarely the visitor experience. It is usually the amount of custom design, the number of pages, and how much service comes with it.
What drives the price
- Number of pages. A contractor usually needs a home page, services, gallery, reviews and contact. That is a small site.
- Custom design vs. a clean template. Custom design costs much more and rarely brings more calls.
- Photos and copy. Writing text and sourcing photos takes time. If you supply your own phone photos, it gets cheaper.
- Hosting and updates. Some agencies charge monthly, some once, some both.
What you can skip
- A blog you will never write.
- Heavy animations and sliders that slow the page.
- Features you do not use, like online shops or logins.
Ongoing costs to expect
You need hosting, a domain name (usually about $10 to $20 a year) and someone to fix things when they break. Ask what is included before you sign.
Questions to ask any web designer
- Will I see the site before I pay?
- Who owns the site and the domain?
- What happens if I want to leave?
- Is the site fast and good on a phone?
